Speaker Pelosi also intends to forge ahead with larger spending bill.
The House of Representatives is hoping to vote next week on both facets of President Biden’s far-reaching domestic agenda: a bipartisan infrastructure bill and a much larger social benefits package.
“That’s the plan,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi said as she emerged from the leadership meeting in her Capitol office Friday. In a letter to members of her party shortly thereafter, the House speaker stopped just short of guaranteeing both votes next week but laid out the steps “as we move forward to pass two jobs bills next week.”
Her strategy is intended to break the impasse between the conflicting factions of her party’s caucus by meeting the demands of both moderates, who have insisted on a standalone infrastructure vote by Monday, and progressives, who were poised to sink the public works bill unless the larger package of “family” benefits was passed in tandem.
Because of tweaks still being made to the larger bill, it may not be ready for the floor of either chamber until sometime in October.
